Serpentine

I stood about an inch taller than her. Just enough for her to look up at me on the tube. She was a woman. Her long eye lashes hid her big eyes, but when they got through, they grabbed me and seemingly changed colour. When we found a seat, she planted a kiss on my shoulder. I didn’t understand why that kiss found the lapel of my blazer. I would have gladly received it on my lips.

I was still playing a game. That’s all I knew how to do. The idea of commitment had dissipated a while ago. Serpentine was that game in song. I didn’t know, but she had won before I had even learnt the rules.

As our lives got further entangled she grew to know me. I became ‘two-time Ranj’… things generally landed a little later for me.

In the car on the journey to the airport on our way to our honeymoon, she planted a kiss on my shoulder. It landed. She was full of love, and it needed a place to go. It was the right place for it.

And your bird can sing

The sun’s shining for a change. And these birds have congregated on the large tree that backs on to the garden…….
